Lubbock, TX– Brittney Bennett is using her status as a Miss Texas contestant to promote autism awareness. She decided to use the learning difference as her platform after her brother was diagnosed with it a few years prior. She’s titled her platform campaign “Autism Awareness: Finding the Gold Within.”

Bennet has been competing in pageants since 2008 and finds them to be a great way to endorse her cause. After a rehearsal this past Sunday at the Lubbock-Cooper’s preforming arts center, Bennett met with the Lubbock Avalanche Journal and had this to say about her experience:

“I’ve met so many different people through my platform, especially a young man named Jackson Poteet.  He really kind of changed my life. I watched him since I first started competing in 2008 and I’ve seen the progress that he’s made as an individual with autism spectrum disorder. It’s not a dead-end diagnosis, but it’s a beginning of a great journey.”

With her platform she’ll be able to make 400 appearances and spread awareness throughout the lone star state.  Bennett said,

“That’s my goal. More then competing, I really love the job of Miss Lubbock and the job of Miss Texas. You’re a role model for the entire state,”

She’ll be competing for the title of Miss Texas against Miss Brownfield Etter next month.
