ARIZONA – Firefighters VS Autism announces their First annual Golf Tournament on November 22, 2014. Firefighters vs Autism was founded to to raise awareness amongst the general public of the dangers associated with people with autism spectrum disorders which leads them often wandering.
People with an autism spectrum disorder are not aware of the dangers of wandering or the dangers of drowning in water. Firefighters vs Autism want everyone to be AWARE and look out for those on the autism spectrum as they are not able to grasp the true dangers or wandering and drowning.
Not only have firefighters had extensive training, see first hand the results of wandering, some firefighters have children or family members with an autism spectrum disorder. Their primary goal is to enlighten all first responders and caregivers of the dangers of wandering and drowning.
Autism Spectrum Disorders are a group of developmental, social, communicative and behavioral challenges. No two persons disorder is the same. This makes it more difficult for the general public to understand the ranges and severity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The one think they all have in common is a problem with social interaction.
The Interactive Autism Network Research report, entitled Elopement and Wandering (2011) has stated that over 48% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders wander from their safe environment. This wandering consists of leaving a safe place like home or school undetected, leaving their backyard following something that sparked an interest and wandering into uncharted and unsafe waters.
Firefighters as first responders know this scenario all to well. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 accidental drowning accounted for 91% (in the United States) of children within the Autism Spectrum Disorders accidental deaths. Firefighters vs Autism are sponsoring and conducted workshops throughout the community bringing enlightenment to those who do not understand the autism spectrum disorders.
The firefighters have some interesting fundraising events like their Firefighters Calendar which can be purchased online at their website along with other items. Their fundraising has been able to help families impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders acquire fencing for their yards at no cost.
Their newest event, the First annual Firefighters vs Autism golf outing hopes to raise not only funds but awareness and enjoyment by all that are involved. Presently they are operating out of Tucson and southern Arizona with the intent of expanding into other communities. Firefighters vs Autism decided to make this golf outing an annual event just like their calendar.
