640_AutismMELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA – The greatest challenge the ex-wife of slain underworld boss, Carl Williams, has been raising a child with autism. Roberta Williams was part of Melbourne’s criminal class and survived an all out underworld war.

She spent six months in prison in 2004 for her involvement in trafficking $100,000 worth of ecstasy.  Even prison should not compare to finding out her fifth child, Giuseppe, has autism.

Williams told A Current Affair

“That was the first kick in the guts to hear those words, you have no idea,”

Williams had a very difficult pregnancy emotionally as her sister, mom, niece and ex-husband had died while she was pregnant. Williams received the news of Giuseppe’s autism diagnosis when he turned two.

One in one hundred children fall on the autism spectrum in Australia. Fiona Sharkie from the Victorian autism support group Amaze, commented that autism does no discriminate.  Many parents have no idea where to go for assistance.  Amaze has been extremely helpful providing assistance not only to those on the autism spectrum but to the entire family as well.

After regaining her strength and with assistance from various autism spectrum disorder help groups Williams says she would not change a thing.  He son is the love of her life.
