Autism and AbuseRocklin, Calif. — Parents of two students with autism were outraged after finding out that their children were reportedly abused by their special education teacher at the Breen Elementary School in Rocklin, Calif.

Keith Caldwell, who has a son at Breen, and Jenn Hugunin, who also has a child in the same school, filed charges against the school and their children’s teacher after receiving a phone call from the Rocklin Police Department informing them of the alleged abuse.

In an interview with Fox 40, Hugunin stated:

“As a parent, you can’t even describe the horror and the shock of being contacted by the police department, telling you that your child has been a victim of child abuse in their classroom by their teacher.”

The parents of the two students filed charges against the Rocklin Unified School District Thursday, alleging that the school’s special education teacher physically and psychologically abused their children, while the school failed to inform them of the incident.

The teacher, whom they identified as Sherry McDaniel, has reportedly been under investigation by the Rocklin Police since May after her aide anonymously tipped off the alleged abuse to the police.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, the Rocklin Unified School District told:

“The Rocklin Unified School District is committed to the safety of all students. However, the District has a legal obligation to protect the privacy and due process rights of all parties involved and cannot comment on specifics. The District is fully cooperating with the investigation by law enforcement. The teacher was placed on administrative leave last spring when the District was made aware of these allegations. The District will take appropriate disciplinary actions as necessary.”
