Mission, B.C – A girl with autism and epilepsy has been denied a school trip to Prince Edward Island by her school because of her medical condition according to a report in Global News Canada.
Brooklyn, who is 15 signed up for an exchange program organised by SEVEC, because one of her ambitions is to travel the world. Her mother Melanie Bowen explained that disclaimers and medical waivers were signed in November for the trip departing in May.
A partial seizure during the exchange visit to Brooklyn’s home changed everything, and her trip was cancelled by Bluefield school on Prince Edward Island.
Behaviour consultant Jodi Tucker, who is the founder and CEO of Kids Matter told Global News:
“What is happening to Brooklyn should be understood in the context of what we value as a society in terms of privacy, identity, what it means to be a Canadian citizen. What Brooklyn is experiencing is not in line with what we feel about inclusion and diversity.”
Sevec have issued an apology, but the teenager has set up a Facebook page to appeal against the decision.
