Two-Year old boy from Tennessee uses play mat to communicate

Rylan Kirksey, Tennessee – Rylan is a 2 year old little boy who has severe low-functioning Autism.

My Fox Atlanta news report that Rylan has found a way to communicate that has surprised everyone. He uses a play mat that was bought at a yard sale that is covered in letters and numbers.

Tasha Kirksey, Rylan’s mother started saying letters aloud when Rylan pointed to them and she soon realized that he was spelling out words.

He has spelled words such as, elephant, zebra and his own name.

Rylan can also add up numbers using his mat. Rylan, who has never spoken seems to have found a way to communicate with his family.

Tasha says:

“That’s what every parent thinks of when they’re pregnant: what’s their first word going to be? They think about all these things. When it doesn’t happen, it’s devastating. To know that I’m finally going to be able to communicate with him? It’s awesome! I can’t wait!”

Tasha says she will continue to use the mat with Rylan,

“He’s taught me more than I could ever teach him. Patience, understanding. Just love. He’s amazing to me. I can’t wait to see what the future holds next. What he does next!”
