SAN FRANCISCO – A new video in the Living Online series by the BBC showcases the work of American not for profit company the Specialist Guild in training adults with autism in specific workplaces.

With new CDC findings reporting that one in 68 children in America now have autism, these children are growing up and struggling to find a place in the workplace. It is thought that between 80 and 90pc of individuals diagnosed with autism will remain unemployed.

Co founder of The Specialist Guild Andy Aczel believes that people with autism bring their own blue sky thinking to certain workplaces. He said:

“The thing that I say when I try to explain that people with autism can be superior at certain jobs is because they think outside of the box, because they don’t see any box.”

There’s a huge human potential that we are throwing away because someone isn’t looking you in the eye or smiling all the time.”
