Wednesbury, Stoke on Trent, UK – A 24 year old man with Asperger’s syndrome who was charged with rape in December has been sent to jail despite the probation services recommendation to the judge that he required specialist rehabilitation.
He was jailed for four years on January 3, after being charged for the felony in North Staffordshire.
Probation officers had recommended a course of rehabilitation and support that he would not receive in a mainstream jail.
Judge David Fletcher told the court ( and was later reported in The Stoke Sentinel) that:
“For any probation officer to suggest prison is not an option is completely irresponsible.”
The judge has since asked the Probation service for a written explanation.
