A £45 Million specialist unit for children with autism and special educational needs is planned to be built in Northampton, UK.

Construction is meant to start as soon as possible at St Andrew’s Hospital, the largest medium security hospital of it’s kind in Europe. the unit plans to unite existing services from the County under one roof, providing care for children with autism, mental illnesses and special educational needs from across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland.

Speaking to the Northampton Chronicle and Echo, a spokeswoman  for parent charity, St Andrew’s Healthcare, said:

“There are very few services like this elsewhere in the UK, and this will be the largest adolescent facility of its kind in Europe. We plan that the building will include educational and therapy spaces as well as residential facilities for 110 young people.”

The school, named St Andrew’s college, already has an excellent rating by OFSTED, the UK standards in education official body.

The spokeswoman added :

“At a time when the NHS faces significant pressures, as a charity and a major local employer, we will continue to make significant investments in improving the specialist care we offer.”

A Public consultation will begin next month.
