Connecticut- Advocates have pushed in over 37 states and the District of Columbia for reform in the way insurance companies consider autism therapy and payment for treatment. Connecticut has issued a bulletin with respect to changes under the Federal Insurance guidelines and how it may affect those on the autism spectrum in Connecticut
Connecticut in accordance with the new federal laws prohibiting plans to impose limits for treatment in ten categories issued a bulletin. Some of these plans will restrict the number of visits for medical visits.
The State of Connecticut claims autism behavior therapy is a “habilitative” benefit therefore it is considered medical. This is providing much confusion within the state and federal programs as well as private insurance carriers.
Many parents of children on the autism spectrum count on their insurance to help in the extensive long-term treatment needed for their children. The autism spectrum disorder covers a large range from difficulties in communication and social interaction to repetitive and inappropriate behavior.
If there is this change in the description of autism therapy treatments, whether it be listed as medical or mental health related this will cause a setback in the progress that has been made in the past years.
