Conference aimed at helping young adults and teens who are on the autistic spectrum

East Haddam, Connecticut – Franklin Academy joined with the Asperger’s Awareness Council to host an autism awareness conference yesterday. Kate Huether from the AAC said the event was aimed at educating parents, family and staff working with teenagers and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

“The goal of the conference is to also give strategies for coping,”

Franklin Academy is a boarding and day school for children with nonverbal learning differences. At present there are 95 students.

The AAC is based in New York City and raise awareness for Asperger’s.

The conference’s keynote speaker, Liane Holliday-Riley, talked about, Pretending to Be Normal. Liane Holliday-Riley is author of “Parenting Girls on the Autism Spectrum: Overcoming the Challenges and Celebrating the Gifts” which Autism Daily Newscast reviewed here.

The Latest Research in the Field was also discussed by James McPartland who is an assistant professor of child psychiatry and psychology, director of the Yale Developmental Disabilities Clinic and associate director of the Developmental Electrophysiology Laboratory at the Yale Child Study Center.
