Duplication of federal funding for autism research more than 1 billion dollars

brokenpiggybankAutism committee receives dubious award for fiscal irresponsibility.

Each week The Washington Times awards the “Golden Hammer” to those that display the highest examples of fiscal redundancy, waste and abuse. The distinction this week gos to the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee and the agencies involved for unnecessary duplication.

The Washington Times reports that between 2008 and 2012 approximately 1.4 billion has been spend on autism research.

They point out that the investigators at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) consider 84% of this spending to be redundant. The GAO said that the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee:

“may have missed opportunities to coordinate federal autism activities and reduce duplication of effort and resources.”

Autism Speaks, responded to the GAO report by reiterating

“its call for close monitoring of federal autism research spending to assure that scarce dollars are used efficiently in studying the nation’s fastest growing developmental disability.”

Full details on the reason for this week’s “Golden Hammer” can be found here.
