Dubai– Sukhbir Singh, a Bollywood bhangra singer, performed at the Dubai Autism Centre last Thursday in an effort to raise awareness about ASD.
The renowned singer, who sang “Dil Laga”, a song featured in the film Dhoom 2, provided both students and staff members with the unique opportunity to watch Singh perform live. The big-hearted star was, in turn, offered the chance to not only receive a tour of the facility but was able to meet with dozens of pupils who are currently attending the center as well. The visit was organized after Mahender Bhojwani, a businessman and long-time friend of Singh’s whose son is on the spectrum and attends the school, asked the singer to perform at the facility.
Both hoped that show would bring attention to the center and the work that is currently underway to build a larger one this year. Presently the facility, which relies on public and corporate donations to operate, can only accommodate 52 students. However the larger custom-built facility is set to provide services for approximately 200 children and teens, many of whom are currently on a waiting list to receive programming. Singh thus hopes that his support will ultimately make a difference stating:
“It’s vitally important that society in general learns more about autism and becomes more understanding of children with the condition.”
